NBA Playoffs Off to a Great Start

The NBA Playoffs are in full swing and so far have proven to be extremely entertaining with underdogs winning on the road, incredible displays of athleticism, and some competitive series. Isn't fun to think we'll almost have at least one play off game on TV for the next month?! Really, whether you're an NBA fan or not, the playoffs are always entertaining, and it's hard not to watch some of the world's best athletes compete with 100% effort (finally). The 2011 playoffs have so far been record breaking for ratings for various reasons. Though, having five of the largest TV markets with teams in contention certainly does not hurt (Lakers, Mavericks, Knicks, Celtics, Bulls). We anticipate the rest of the playoffs will continue to be just as exciting as the beginning, and are hoping for a new champion this year!

DeAngelo Vickers

Will Ferrel starred in the most recent episode of The Office as DeAngelo Vickers, a Southwest-lover, faked baby enthusiast and Michael Scott's replacement. He enters the scene as a loveable character with a personality similar to Scott's. As the show progresses his humor begins to resemble Todd Packer's crudeness. It is obvious that the other characters start growing weary of him, and it made viewers weary as well. How can this be Michael Scott's replacement? The answer may be simpler than we thought: he isn't. It has been revealed that Will Ferrel never intented to take over Steve Carrel's role as the manager of Dunder Mifflin, although he did agree to a multiple-episode appearance. Viewers are growing tired of the rumors surrounding the show. Who knows if the producers are any closer to finding a replacement. Might this be the end The Office and our Thursday night laughs? Click here to watch Training Day, episode 20 of The Office featuring Will Ferrel.

Ludacris in Pullman? That's insane!

Ludacris was born Christopher Brian Bridges in the small town of Champaigne, Illinoise. He started rapping at the wee age of nine. When Christopher was in high school his family moved to Atlanta, GA . There he was exposed to a wide range of music from Rock to Hip Hop. Ludacris has also made 21 movie appearances including the films: Gamer, RocknRolla, Fred Clause, Crash and 2 Fast 2 Furious. He has 41 Soundtrack titles and is a very successful producer. The 2011 PGA Masters wrapped up Sunday afternoon and it sure lived up to all of the hype. You may have even logged onto your Facebook account and noticed many status updates about the tournament, which I know surprised me. "Tiger is back!" "Gotta love Masters Sunday's." and so on. Golf is becoming more and more popular to the general public, even to those who have never picked up a club in their life. But how could it not when Tiger is back in the hunt on a Sunday, young McIlroy has an epic meltdown and we had no idea who would win. But surprisingly, according to the New York Times, Charl Schwartzel's stunning victory couldn't quite match last year's Masters ratings (highest ever).  Perhaps though the 12% fall wasn't all that shocking. Last year it was Tigers' return back to competitive golf after the collapse of his marriage, and really his entire personal life, and Phil Mickelson, everyone's favorite lefty, won the tournament. The Office- Finally Wrapping Up

The NBC hit, The Office, will soon be wrapping things up after 7 seasons. The sitcom took a while to catch on with many viewers when NBC first introduced it, but it didn't take long for Steve Carell and his office mates to catch the eye of millions of viewers every Thursday night. Many would agree that the show peaked in seasons 3-5 and these last couple of seasons have had episodes that aren't quite up to par. Some would even go as for to say that the show has officially "jumped the shark." While NBC hasn't officially announced that season 7 would be the show's last, it has been made clear that Steve Carell's Michael Scott will not be the head honcho any longer if the show does in fact continue on. It is hard to imagine The Office without Michael Scott's daily shenanigans and we can't imagine how it would even be worth continuing on without him.

In the last episode of The Office Michael Scott and Holly became engaged, and the couple announced that they would soon be departing Scranton to be closer to Holly's ailing father. On April 14th the new episode will air and it looks like we will be introduced to Michael's replacement, who just happens to be played by funny-man Will Ferrell. We are crossing our fingers for a couple of hilarious final episodes with Carell's departure, as we wouldn't expect anything less. Check out a preview to the next episode.

March Madness Living up to the Hype

It's that time of year. A time when sports fanatics, casual fans, and those who haven't even watched a single tip-off all year come together and fill out their brackets. And then of course sweat it when one of their final four teams gets the boot.

The NCAA tournament has become one of the most exciting and fun sporting events in America, right up there with the Superbowl and World Series. How could it not be with the upsets, the cinderella stories,  and the teams you love to hate.

This was the first year that every single game of the NCAA tournament was broadcasted on television for everyone to see on four different stations, CBS, TNT, TBS and truTV. Switching up the way the games were broadcasted proved to be genius as ratings hit an eleven year high.

While many of the "big name" programs are out (Pittsburgh, Michigan State, UCLA, Louisville, and Duke) I think it's safe to say viewers are in good hands with teams like Butler (once again) blazing a trail to the Final Four and we can expect ratings to continue to soar.

Students are flooding back to Pullman, assignments are piling up and rain is washing away the smiles. As the tans from spring break begin to fade and stress levels start to rise, unlike the temperatures in the Palouse, cabin fever will reign in over the student body.

Destress with some light entertainment to get your mind of your studies...temporarily. Movies are a great entertainment option for this week, you can avoid the nasty weather and unwind under the safe haven of a theater roof.

This week playing at Village Centre Cinemas in Pullman are: Limitless, The Lincoln Lawyer, Paul, Beastly, Battle: Los Angeles, Red Riding Hood, Gnomeo and Juliet 3D, Rango and Adjustment Bureau.

Limitless is number one in the box office this week and is reported to be liked by 74% of its viewers on rottentomatoes.com. Lincoln Lawyer and Paul received the highest ratings both from viewers and movie critics. Find more ratings by clicking on the movie title.

"Limitless" No. 1 at the Box Office

While final figures of ticket sales will be released today, the thriller "Limitless" took the top spot at the Box Office over the weekend.  The acting duo of Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper were a hit with audiences as they helped bring in $19M for the movie.  This move drops last weekend's topper "Battle:  Los Angeles" to 3rd with $14.6M.

The sci-fi film from Relativity Media stars Bradley Cooper as a starving writer, who comes across a magical pill that helps him tap into the large portion of the brain that goes largely unused by the average person.  His skeptical girlfriend, played by Abbie Cornish and savvy financial guru, played by Robert DeNiro, aid in the conflict of the plot and make Cooper's character difficult to ignore.

There is no doubt the film has appeal.  The handsome "Hangover" and "A-Team" star was constantly front and center and who could resist those baby blues?  Kyle Davies, Relativity's president of theatrical distribution had this to say about the reasons for the movies success, "Limitless" allowed the star to show a more dramatic side. He's coming into his own as a leading man.  I think he appeals to men and women.  Plus, DeNiro is just awesome in this." Analyst for Hollywood.com, Paul Dergarabedian added this, "the simple tag line on the film's posters -- "What if a pill could make you rich and powerful?" --went a long way in luring audiences.  The art of the tag line has sort of been lost and this brought it back."

Lure audiences it did.  I was intrigued in the action from the start.  The cast was well put together and lent to the creation of a universe that I am sure many people would want to live in.  Great dialogue and sequencing I give this movie 4.5 out of 5 stars and believe it is completely deserving of the top spot at the Box Office.  Here's to hoping Cooper will become the big Hollywood leading man that he is oh so capable of being.

For more information on how the top 10 at the Box Office ended up visit:  http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/03/20/limitless-brings-1m-tops-box-office/

What You Missed at the Grammy Awards!!

The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California was filled with great music and tributes that lasted well into last night as the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards brought music's best and brightest together.  With what is sure to go down as one of the most memorable Grammys, the evening began with a tribute to Aretha Franklin by 5 dazzling women, all of which are not afraid to show a little diva.  Yolanda Adams, Christina Aguilera, Florence Welch, Martina McBride and Jennifer Hudson delivered a great performance highlighting some of Franklin's most notable records of all time.  The performance was followed by a video cast of Aretha thanking everyone for the well wishes, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xh0t3d_211213232_webcam#from=embed

Certainly, however, the most elaborate performance of the night came from Cee-Lo Green. All dressed up in colorful feathers and a sequined head cap, looked like a one-man tribute to George Clinton and Liberace as he performed an edited version of his nominated hit "F--- You," (The Song Otherwise Known as "Forget You") with cameos from Gwyneth Paltrow and Jim Henson Co.'s Muppets as backup singers. Paltrow wore a black suit with a deep V-neck, and played the vamped up girl pretty darn well to go opposite Green and all his glory.

One surprise of the night came from jazz artist Esperanza Spalding.  Spalding beat out Justin Bieber, Florence + the Machine, Mumford & Sons and Drake to win best new artist. Best New Artist was her only nomination for Sunday's awards and she went 1 for 1 as this was also the first time ever a jazz artist has gone home with this award.

While hip-hop and pop made their single presence felt in the form of Eminem and Train (Train won best pop performance by a duo or group with vocals-the band thanked Justin Bieber for taking a solo career). Country music made sure the music academy couldn't ignore it. Miranda Lambert won for best female country vocal performance while Lady Antebellum took home FIVE awards, including record and song of the year for its crossover smash "Need You Now" from their album "The Suburbs"; They beat out Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream," "The Fame Monster" by Lady Gaga and Eminem's "Recovery" - 2010's best selling album - to take home the trophy, a surprise win that left the Detroit MC shut out in all the top categories (Eminem was ahead with 10 nominations heading into the Grammys but came away with only 2 awards).

Personally, I found the performances of Katy Perry, Eminem/Dr. Dre/Rhianna and Drake/Rihanna the best and most true to form, they sounded excellent on stage.  The rare performances by Mick Jagger (celebrating the late Solomon Burke), Bob Dylan and Barbra Striesand were inspiring and brought the audience to their feet every time.

For a more complete wrap up of the nights events head to http://www.grammys.com/ to catch vids, and other special features available.

The Roommate Movie Review

The Roommate is a thriller about two freshman girls making their transition into college. One of the roommates, Rebecca, becomes massively obsessed with her new "friend" and roommate Erica. The story unravels quickly and begins without fair warning. The Roommate lacks plot twist and a good ending. There is little offered in terms of surprise. Leighton Meester did an outstanding job of playing a psychopath, Rebecca. Her and the rest of the young, attractive actresses managed to keep the crowd from walking out of the theater with their risque outfits, tittelating shower scene and girl on girl action. This is a lame attempt at attracting viewership, so far bringing in $26.1 million in box office earnings. We give this "thriller" a four out of ten, which is generous compared to the 2.7 it received on rottentomatoes.com.

Super Bowl Entertainment...a Super Miss?

Residents of Green Bay are walking around with an extra spring in their step today after the Packers won Super Bowl XLV.  While the game was good, as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Packers had a nice "back and forth" going, the entertainment factor was lacking.

It all begins with the singing of the National Anthem at the start of the game.  With American soldiers in the crowd and passionate NFL players standing by ready to play for the masses, it is important to have an inspiring anthem.  Unfortunately, guest singer Christina Aguilera did not deliver any inspiration as she completely butchered the song.  She tried way too hard with style and innotation and forgot about the words.

Check out the performance here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjvVon4w-QQ

Usually, I am a big fan of Christina, she has a wonderful, powerful voice but this National Anthem seems to be a challenge for her.  In the past she has proven difficulties with missing words or phrases, see here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d33FPKM6gv0.  Again, I applaud her range but would like to see a toned down, traditional version, in its entirety, especially at the start of what is considered a great American traditional, the Super Bowl.  Two of the best performances of the National Anthem, EVER, I believe are from Whitney Houston circa 1991 and Beyonce circa 2004.  Check out these links to see what I am talking about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHmdu_I_0zI (Whitney)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhrrGu2rcZ4 (Beyonce)

Next on the menu, the halftime show.  The Black Eyed Peas were on the mainstage with guest appearances by Sledge of Guns N' Roses and rapper/singer/women swooner Usher.  First, the back up dancers were incredible, they were on their A game indeed, however, the audio delivery by the Black Eyed Peas was almost to non-existent at times.  While I understand that is not necessarily their fault, the stadium system may be more to blame, the group however must understand that their voices are going to need to be powerful, you are not in a concert arena people.  Member Fergie has a great voice and the band as a whole sounds good to me live so I give the performance a B, Usher and Sledge were the saving grace.

The final component of the show, the commercials, were not what I expected.  After the massive success of the Betty White Snicker's commercial last year, it seems advertisers remained in the comfort zone this year.  Rosanne Barr getting pummeled by a huge log was funny but too similar to White getting tackled in a flag football game.  I did like the "Doritos Cheese Dust" commercial simply because it was gross, unexpected and completely relatable.  Oh, c'mon you have never tasted something so delicious that losing any excess flavoring could be considered a slight crime? Ever had a Cinnabon Cinnamon Role? Overall, Youtube will not get any traffic from me as I try and re-live a commercial over and over.

Razzie v. Oscar, Who's Hot and Who's Not!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!  Hollywood is in the midst of awards season but there are some awards no star wants to be handed.  The Razzie award is like Oscar's evil twin brother, a twin that constantly points out your flaws and fails.  The Huffington Post recently reported the 2011 Razzie Award nominations.  The nominations for worst in the year of film were formally announced Sunday night with some big names getting nods.  Including Jennifer Aniston for Worst Actress of the Year for her role in "The Bounty Hunter".  Her male counterpart in "The Bounty Hunter", Gerard Butler got recognized on the Actor side.

For a complete look at all Razzie nominations visit http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/24/razzie-awards-nominations-2011_n_812859.html#s228666&title=Razzies_2011_Worst

One the bright side, Academy Award nominations are also circulating.  The leader of Oscar nods this year is Colin Firth's flick "The King's Speech" with 12 nominations.  "True Grit" comes in second with 10 nominations.  Look out for the "True Grit" breakout actress Hailee Steinfeld to come away with some acting honors.

Further information on all things Oscars check this out! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/25/oscars-2011-nominees-list-academy-awards-nominations_n_813399.html

The Academy Awards air February 27 and are hosted by actor and nominee James Franco.
